L’pool V Arsenal: Both sides have a LOT to lose

In Arsenal FC, Premier League on December 13, 2009 by Highbury N5 Editor

What a day yesterday was, it hit about 200 on the Arsenal luckometer but with all the injuries we have had in recent weeks it was just the kind of day we needed, all the lads need to do now is take advantage of a situation which doesn’t come around all too often.

United beaten at home, Chelsea held at home and we also have the chance to really smash Liverpool, and Steven Gerrard, in the face.

Yesterdays results soften the blow of Torres being fit to start, the annoying twat has scored against us enough times already but hopefully Vermaelen and Gallas can contain him because he can’t be fully fit, the same goes for Gerrard because after 4 consecutive losses for Alex Song he needs to play a massive part in the game to keep him quiet, if that happens, we can win this comfortably.

This Liverpool side don’t have the resilience of recent seasons but you know on the big occasions, nine times outta ten they are going to raise their game. Rafa wants to use this game to kick-start the scousers season but we need to really shit in his porridge and add to their misery.

The one area we can really get at Liverpool is in the full-back area and you have to wonder who will play out wide, Arshavin will probably play through the middle again and his four goals will no doubt still be pretty fresh in their players minds. Lets have a little reminder:

What a night that was eh? A repeat of that would be most welcome, the 4 goals conceded apart of course.

Back on topic though, Glenn Johnson does not convince me and we could take advantage of his attacking instincts, I have a sneaky feeling Diaby might just start out on the left to give us a bit of power and height in the side, with Nasri starting on the right and the little Russian down the middle.

Walcott probably won’t start after playing 90 in midweek but will come on as an impact sub I am sure, he does well at Anfield and has a habit of producing at least one of those electrifying runs of his that results in a goal, an improvement on his midweek performance is more than welcome and the same goes from Carlos Vela who we might see in the second half.

I expect the midfield to consist of Song, Cesc and Denilson. Its a big game for Denilson, despite the bad results for Liverpool in the past few months they still have a lot of quality, Aquaplainy is due to start and Gerrard will start too so both Song, Denilson and Cesc to a certain extent will have to put in a good defensive shift.

I’m not going to predict any score-line for this game but I doubt there will be many goals, going forward we are not as sharp as we were in the earlier stages of the season, especially with all our absences, means a goal glut is very unlikely, and Liverpool’s lack of confidence altogether means they will probably be more defensive than usual and hope for a moment of brilliance to win them the game.

So its all set, its a massive game this. IF we win, and I highlight the big IF in that line, we can shut the gap on the top two considerably and we will be right back in the thick of things which is surprising considering our recent form (P6 W2 L4 in all comps).

Come on Arsenal!

’til tomorrow.
