Vela inks new deal/Arshavin to sign next?

In Arsenal FC on December 10, 2009 by Highbury N5 Editor

The club have just released the news of Carlos Vela signing what is described as a ‘new long-term contract’ on the website, since Gazidis has arrived at the club there have been a hell of a lot of contract renewals: Eduardo, Nicklas Bendtner, Theo Walcott, Aaron Ramsey, Alex Song, Sanchez Watt, Jack Wilshere, van Persie and Denilson have inked new deals in the recent months.

What is the plan here though? Is it to ensure that if we can’t buy the best players around, we at least keep hold of our prized assets? It could be to ensure we get top dollar for them if we ever decide to sell?

Also, expect new deals for Gallas and Rosicky before the new year. Their contracts expire in the summer so are free to talk to other clubs in January.

Given the rush of new deals at the club it was definitely one of the priorities for Ivan Gazidis to work on when he started his new role in January, and judging by the signing of 11 new deals, he has been doing his job very well.

One thing I would like to see is a new deal for Andrey Arshavin, just to send a message out to other clubs that they don’t have a hope in hell of getting hold of him, he has been at the club almost a year now so would probably have about three years left on his deal. It is hard to estimate just how much time he has on his contract because the club are notoriously cagey with contract details.

Back onto Vela for a minute though. I do admit I have been critical of him of late and I do not regret being critical at all, I rate the player highly and would just like to see him take it up a level now. He has a fantastic opportunity to secure his future and worth at the club and he is not taking it at present. Maybe he needs a confidence boosting goal? I guess we will see in the remainder of this season and in the next few weeks in particular. The news that Bendtner is out until 2010 will give him even more time to try and make a mark in the first team.

As I said earlier, Ivan Gazidis has done a lot of good since he arrived at Arsenal, he has quite a lot more work to do and it looks set to be another tiring January for him as we will be in the market for new players. To stand a chance of silverware, we have to be.
