The £40 million game – Wenger hints at new defensive arrival

In Arsenal FC, Champions League 2009/10 on August 18, 2009 by Highbury N5 Editor

So tonight we play Celtic in the first leg of our Champions League qualifier at Celtic Park, in essence a 40 million quid game. No pressure then.

The team news is that Fabregas, Sagna and Denilson are doubts and will have to undergo fitness tests before the game. I can’t see all three of them starting if they are not 100% so maybe Diaby will step in for Denilson which is a shame considering his performance against Everton. There is also news that Theo Walcott has been ruled out of the game on Saturday after his back problem came back. Thanks, England, thanks a fucking lot.

Of course, in this seasons CL we have the added advantage of Andrey Arshavin who was cup-tied last season. Wenger said:

“He can make the difference, Andrey is a very efficient player who can turn up at any moment and make a difference but again we do not focus on any individual.

“Our strength is our team play because this team has been educated 80-90 per cent together for four or five years and one target is to develop the team play and not focus too much on individuals.”

Any team getting a player of Arshavin’s calibre back into Europe’s premier competition will be boosted, he is a match winner and it wouldn’t suprise me if he bagged an important goal tonight.

I think we might just edge it tonight, but if its still evens at half time it wouldn’t surprise me if it ended up a draw. Yes, Mobray has said he likes to get the ball down on the deck and play football, but has acknowledged that its is very, very hard to beat Arsenal playing like that. His ‘cunning plan’ might just be to sit men behind the ball and try to get in our faces, which is something that doesn’t bother this team as much anymore.

If we get an early goal I think we should win comfortably, there is a big gulf in class between the PL and the SPL but Celtic’s home record should be respected as it is one of the best in Europe.

I think we will stick with the 4-3-3 that worked so well on Saturday evening but as I said earlier, it is a great shame there are some injury doubts around.

At the press conference yesterday AW admitted that the defence is an area that needs to be improved on, probably hinting at if we have another arrival, it may well be in the defensive department. He said:

“I wouldn’t like to come out too much on the tactical aspect of the game,” he said. But we know that last year we conceded 37 goals and you cannot win the championship in England conceding 37 goals no matter how good you are going forward.

“That is something we have to address and correct compared to last year.”

Its good to know its an area he knows needs improving, I’m still convinced that we won’t buy until after next Wednesday, when we know if we are in the CL proper. This game is worth 40 million quid.

We have a damn good team, but it would be a shame to diminish our trophy chances with a weak squad.

Also worth mentioning; Wenger thinks Fabregas will be getting a fair few goals this season, pointing out that he always scored a lot of goals when he was younger and the goalscoring usually comes back at around 22-23 years old. He has already nearly matched his tally for last season and hopefully he can get 10+ goals for us this term, he has always had the potential to get goals for us.

Right, I’m well up for the game tonight. COME ON YOU REDSSSSS!!!

More tomorrow.

  1. thank god walcott is out he is overrated just kicking the damn ball and hoping to get past defenders english players really suck big time dude

  2. Looks like salman does not know much of football… i think he is a spurs fan… lol

  3. Don’t talk rubbish salman. Walcott is a good player and soon to be one of the best in the world. He did score 3 goals against croatia, that sucks does it?

  4. Salman, fuck off.

  5. just 2 0r 3 good moments during the whole season dsnt mean u r a gud player

  6. walcott’s mobility can topple any defence. TW14 could be arsenal’s top goalscorer if he is developed like henry was under wenger. nevertheless – defence looks solid {dont sell senderos}. we need a out & out striker for the 4-2-3-1 formation.
